United Way of Miami-Dade appoints Tony Argiz as board chair

Friday, August 10, 2007

MIAMI – United Way of Miami-Dade directors and trustees recently elected Tony Argiz, managing partner of Morrison, Brown, Argiz & Farra LLP (MBAF), as chair of its board. A well-known community and business leader, Argiz begins a one-year term as United Way board chair this summer. He takes over from Richard Fain, chairman and CEO, Royal Caribbean Cruises Ltd., who chaired the United Way board from 2005-2007.

"Tony has a remarkable record of service and leadership in this community," Harve A. Mogul, president and CEO, United Way of Miami Dade, said. "We are thrilled to have someone with his passion and commitment to helping others at the helm of our organization."

For more than 30 years, Argiz has donated his time, money and resources to improve lives in Miami-Dade. Over the years with United Way, he has served as treasurer, chair of United Way's finance and administration committee and co-chair of the campaign. Argiz has also taken on leadership roles at several foundations and charitable organizations throughout the community, including the Orange Bowl Committee, Florida International University Foundation, Miami-Dade College Foundation, the Archbishop's Charity and Development Drive, Coconut Grove Cares and Carrollton School of the Sacred Heart. He is particularly interested in helping shape young lives through education. Argiz was one of first supporters of the newly opened United Way Center for Excellence in Early Education, a national best practice resource and training facility dedicated to improving early learning opportunities for all children.

Argiz learned the importance of community support and involvement from an early age. At nine he moved to the United States from Cuba as part of Operation Pedro Pan without his parents and with little more than the clothes on his back. Alone in a foreign country, Argiz succeeded through hard work and determination. He is a graduate of Florida International University. Since taking on the role of managing partner at MBAF in 1997, Argiz has grown the firm into what is now credited as the largest Florida-based public accounting firm. He lives in Coral Gables with his wife, Conchy and three children.

United Way of Miami-Dade is focused on bringing the community together to focus on four key goals: helping kids and families lead successful lives, improving health and independence, responding to emergency and basic needs and encouraging neighborhood and civic involvement. By strategically investing in quality programs, building partnerships, advocating for better policies, engaging people in the community and leveraging resources, United Way is dedicated to improving lives and creating lasting change in the community.
